HODL Waves: Understanding Bitcoin's Age Distribution and Holder Behavior
Alphractal Research · Jun 19, 2025 · 6 min read
HODL Waves are one of the most visually striking and analytically valuable on-chain metrics in the Bitcoin ecosystem. By displaying the age distribution of Bitcoin's Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) set over time, HODL Waves reveal when long-term holders are accumulating and when they are distributing their coins to new participants. These patterns have reliably mapped to Bitcoin's market cycles since the network's inception.
What Are HODL Waves?
Every bitcoin that exists on-chain resides in a UTXO -- a discrete unit of bitcoin that was created by a transaction and has not yet been spent. Each UTXO has a timestamp recording when it was created. The age of a UTXO is simply the time elapsed since its creation.
HODL Waves group all existing UTXOs into age bands (such as less than 1 day, 1 day to 1 week, 1 week to 1 month, and so on up to 10+ years) and display the percentage of total supply in each band over time. The result is a stacked area chart that ripples like waves as coins move between age bands.
The term "HODL" comes from a famous 2013 Bitcoin forum post where a user misspelled "hold." It has since become the defining term for Bitcoin's long-term holding culture.
Reading HODL Wave Patterns
Accumulation Phases (Older Bands Expand)
When the older age bands (1+ years, 2+ years, 3+ years) are expanding, it means coins are aging in place. Holders are not moving their bitcoin, which indicates strong conviction and accumulation behavior.
Key characteristics of accumulation phases:
- Younger bands (< 3 months) contract: Fewer coins are changing hands, on-chain transaction activity for speculative purposes declines
- Older bands (1-3 years) expand: Coins purchased during the previous cycle's euphoria are maturing as holders refuse to sell at a loss
- Price is typically flat or declining: The market lacks the speculative energy to drive price appreciation
These periods often feel boring and painful, but they are laying the groundwork for the next bull cycle.
Distribution Phases (Younger Bands Expand)
When the younger age bands are expanding rapidly, it means old coins are being spent and replaced by newly created UTXOs. Long-term holders are distributing their coins to new market participants.
Key characteristics of distribution phases:
- Younger bands (< 1 month) expand significantly: A surge of newly created UTXOs indicates heavy transactional activity
- Older bands (2+ years) contract: Long-held coins are finally moving, signaling that patient holders are taking profits
- Price is typically rising sharply: New participants are entering the market, driving demand and price appreciation
Distribution phases coincide with the euphoric stages of bull markets. The transfer of coins from experienced holders to newcomers is the fundamental dynamic that ultimately exhausts buying pressure and sets the stage for a top.
HODL Waves and Market Cycles
The Cycle Pattern
Bitcoin's market cycles follow a remarkably consistent pattern when viewed through HODL Waves:
- Bear market bottom: Older age bands reach their maximum as holders accumulate through the pain
- Early bull market: Older bands begin to contract slightly as some holders start taking profits, but most remain patient
- Mid bull market: The contraction of older bands accelerates as price appreciation becomes too tempting
- Euphoric top: Younger bands dominate as old coins have been distributed and new participants hold most of the supply
- Bear market begins: Younger band holders panic-sell or hold at a loss, beginning the aging process again
The "Realized Cap HODL Waves" Variant
A more advanced version weights each age band not by the number of coins but by the realized value of those coins. This accounts for the fact that a UTXO created when Bitcoin was $100 represents different economic significance than one created at $50,000.

Key Age Bands to Monitor
Less Than 1 Month (Hot Money)
This band represents the most speculative segment of the market. Rapid expansion of this band indicates frenzy-like trading activity and is common during parabolic price moves. When this band reaches 20%+ of the supply, the market is typically in a highly speculative state.
1 to 3 Months (Recent Buyers)
This band captures the "new blood" entering the market. During bull markets, this band expands as new participants enter. During bear markets, it contracts as participants leave or their coins age into older bands.
6 Months to 1 Year (Cycle Holders)
Coins in this band were acquired within the current cycle. Expansion of this band during a bear market is a positive sign -- it means holders are choosing to hold through the downturn rather than sell.
3 to 5 Years (Diamond Hands)
This band represents holders who have survived at least one full market cycle. Expansion indicates deep conviction and typically aligns with the strongest phases of accumulation.
5+ Years (Lost or Ultra-Long-Term)
This band includes both genuinely lost coins (estimated at 3-4 million BTC) and the most convicted holders in the ecosystem. Changes in this band are slow and often reflect supply dynamics rather than active trading decisions.
Practical Analysis on Alphractal
Alphractal's dashboard provides interactive HODL Wave charts where you can:
- Hover over specific dates to see the exact percentage breakdown across all age bands
- Isolate individual bands to track their expansion and contraction in detail
- Compare current HODL Wave patterns with previous cycle phases
- Set screener alerts when specific age bands cross threshold levels
- Use Alpha AI to identify which phase of the HODL Wave cycle the market is currently in and what historically follows
Combining with Other Metrics
HODL Waves are most informative when paired with:
- Supply in Profit/Loss: Understand whether the coins in each age band are in profit or loss
- Realized Price cohorts: See the cost basis of each age band
- Exchange flows: Determine whether coins leaving older bands are being sent to exchanges (likely selling) or to new self-custody (likely redistribution)
Limitations
- Lost coins create a persistent base in the oldest age bands, which can make distribution look less dramatic than it actually is
- Exchange internal movements can create young UTXOs without reflecting genuine economic activity
- Wrapped BTC and custodial products may obscure the true age of holdings as coins are moved for operational reasons
