How to Identify Bitcoin Market Cycle Tops and Bottoms Using On-Chain Data
Alphractal Research · Feb 17, 2025 · 7 min read
Timing the exact top or bottom of a Bitcoin market cycle is nearly impossible. But identifying the zones where tops and bottoms form -- the windows of highest probability -- is entirely achievable with the right tools. The key is not relying on any single indicator but building a multi-metric framework where several independent signals confirm each other.
This guide walks through four of the most powerful on-chain indicators for cycle identification and shows how to combine them into a cohesive system.
The Four Pillars of Cycle Identification
1. NUPL (Net Unrealized Profit/Loss)
What it measures: NUPL calculates the difference between market value (current price times supply) and realized value (aggregate cost basis of all coins), then divides by market value. It tells you whether the average Bitcoin holder is in profit or loss, and by how much.
How to read it for cycle tops:
NUPL moves through five distinct sentiment zones as the cycle progresses:
- Capitulation (NUPL < 0): The market is at a net loss. This is bear market territory.
- Hope/Fear (0 < NUPL < 0.25): Early recovery. Holders are barely profitable.
- Optimism (0.25 < NUPL < 0.5): The market is in comfortable profit. Bull market underway.
- Belief (0.5 < NUPL < 0.75): Strong profit levels. Late-stage bull market.
- Euphoria (NUPL > 0.75): Extreme profit. Nearly all holders are sitting on gains. This zone has historically coincided with cycle tops.
Top signal: NUPL enters the Euphoria zone (above 0.75). In previous cycles, Bitcoin peaked within weeks to months of first entering this zone.
Bottom signal: NUPL falls below zero (Capitulation). When the average holder is at a loss, selling pressure from profit-taking is exhausted.
2. MVRV Z-Score
What it measures: The MVRV Z-Score standardizes the ratio of market value to realized value, measuring how far above or below "fair value" (as defined by realized value) the market currently trades.
How to read it for cycle extremes:
- Z-Score > 7: Extremely overvalued. Every previous cycle top has featured a Z-Score in this range.
- Z-Score 3-7: Overheating. The market is significantly above its aggregate cost basis.
- Z-Score 0-3: Fair value to moderately overvalued. Normal bull market territory.
- Z-Score < 0: Undervalued. Market value is below realized value, meaning the average holder is at a loss. Historic bottom zone.
Top signal: Z-Score exceeds 7. This has coincided with the absolute peak in every previous cycle.
Bottom signal: Z-Score falls below 0. This has only occurred during deep bear market capitulations and has marked accumulation zones.
3. Pi Cycle Top/Bottom
What it measures: The Pi Cycle indicator tracks the relationship between the 111-day moving average and the 350-day moving average multiplied by 2. Their crossover has historically predicted cycle peaks within days.
How to read it for cycle tops:
- Track the convergence of the two moving averages. As they approach each other, the cycle is nearing its peak.
- The actual crossover (111DMA crossing above 350DMA x2) has marked the top within approximately three days in previous cycles.
Top signal: The 111DMA crosses above the 350DMA x2.
Bottom signal: Maximum divergence between the two moving averages, followed by the beginning of convergence, signals that the bear market is transitioning to a new accumulation phase.
4. Puell Multiple
What it measures: The Puell Multiple divides the daily value of newly mined Bitcoin (in USD) by the 365-day moving average of daily mined Bitcoin value. It captures miner revenue relative to its annual trend.
How to read it for cycle extremes:
- Puell Multiple > 4: Miner revenue is dramatically above its annual average. Miners are earning extraordinary profits, which increases sell pressure and historically signals cycle tops.
- Puell Multiple 1-4: Normal range. Miner revenue is tracking reasonably with its long-term trend.
- Puell Multiple < 0.5: Miner revenue is deeply depressed. Miners may be operating at a loss, leading to capitulation events. Historic bottom zone.
Top signal: Puell Multiple exceeds 4.
Bottom signal: Puell Multiple falls below 0.5, indicating miner stress and potential hash rate capitulation.
The Multi-Metric Confirmation Framework
Individual indicators can give false signals. The power of this framework lies in requiring multiple confirmations before acting on a signal.
Identifying a Cycle Top
For high-confidence top identification, look for at least three of four indicators to align:
| Indicator | Top Signal | |-----------|-----------| | NUPL | Enters Euphoria zone (> 0.75) | | MVRV Z-Score | Exceeds 7 | | Pi Cycle | 111DMA crosses above 350DMA x2 | | Puell Multiple | Exceeds 4 |
When three or more of these conditions are met simultaneously (or within a few weeks of each other), the probability of being near a cycle top is historically very high.
Identifying a Cycle Bottom
For bottom identification, the same multi-confirmation approach applies:
| Indicator | Bottom Signal | |-----------|-------------| | NUPL | Falls below 0 (Capitulation) | | MVRV Z-Score | Falls below 0 | | Pi Cycle | Maximum divergence, beginning to converge | | Puell Multiple | Falls below 0.5 |
When three or more bottom signals align, historical precedent strongly supports that the market is in or near a generational accumulation zone.
Practical Implementation
Step 1: Build Your Dashboard
On the Alphractal platform, create a custom dashboard that displays all four indicators simultaneously. Pin the NUPL chart, MVRV Z-Score, Pi Cycle, and Puell Multiple in a grid layout for continuous monitoring.
Step 2: Set Up Alerts
Use Alphractal's screener to configure alerts for:
- NUPL entering Euphoria or Capitulation zones
- MVRV Z-Score crossing above 7 or below 0
- Pi Cycle moving averages converging within 5%
- Puell Multiple crossing above 4 or below 0.5
Step 3: Use Alpha AI for Synthesis
Configure Alpha AI to analyze all four indicators together and generate natural-language assessments of the current cycle position. Rather than manually cross-referencing charts, let AI synthesize the signals into a clear summary.
Step 4: Cross-Reference with Additional Metrics
The four-pillar framework provides the foundation, but you can enhance it with supporting indicators from Alphractal's library of over 1,500 metrics:
- Reserve Risk: Confirms whether long-term holder conviction supports or contradicts the cycle signal
- Exchange reserves: Verifies whether accumulation (bottom) or distribution (top) is occurring
- Stablecoin supply ratio: Provides a measure of buying power relative to market size
- Alpha Price: Adds Alphractal's proprietary fair value model to the valuation framework
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Acting on a single indicator: One indicator flashing "top" while the others are neutral is not a confirmation.
- Expecting precision: These signals identify zones, not exact prices or dates. A "top signal" may precede the actual peak by days or weeks.
- Ignoring the macro context: On-chain indicators operate within a broader macroeconomic environment. Interest rate regimes, liquidity conditions, and regulatory developments can accelerate or delay cycle transitions.
- Applying the same thresholds rigidly: As Bitcoin matures, the thresholds for extreme readings may shift. Each cycle has been slightly less volatile than the last.
