The Puell Multiple: A Guide to Bitcoin Miner Profitability Cycles
Alphractal Research · Aug 21, 2025 · 6 min read
The Puell Multiple is an on-chain metric that focuses on the revenue side of Bitcoin mining to identify periods of extreme profitability or distress among miners. Created by David Puell, this indicator has a strong track record of flagging both major cycle tops and generational buying opportunities by measuring the divergence between current mining revenue and its long-term average.
What Is the Puell Multiple?
The Puell Multiple is calculated by dividing the daily issuance value of Bitcoin (in USD) by the 365-day moving average of daily issuance value.
Puell Multiple = Daily Issuance Value (USD) / 365-Day MA of Daily Issuance Value (USD)
The daily issuance value represents the total USD value of all newly mined bitcoin on a given day. This is the product of the block subsidy (currently 3.125 BTC per block after the April 2024 halving) multiplied by the number of blocks mined that day and the current bitcoin price.
By comparing the current daily issuance value to its yearly average, the Puell Multiple reveals whether miners are currently earning significantly more or less than their historical norm.
How to Interpret the Puell Multiple
High Puell Multiple (> 4)
When the Puell Multiple exceeds 4, miners are earning dramatically more than their yearly average. This typically occurs during parabolic price increases where the USD value of block rewards has surged.
High readings signal:
- Extreme miner profitability: Miners have strong incentive to sell newly mined coins to lock in extraordinary revenues
- Increased sell pressure from miners: As revenue far exceeds operational costs, miners may sell excess inventory
- Overheated market conditions: The price has likely moved too far, too fast relative to sustainable levels
Historically, Puell Multiple values above 4 have preceded every major market top.
Low Puell Multiple (< 0.5)
When the Puell Multiple drops below 0.5, miners are earning less than half of their yearly average daily revenue. This indicates severe distress in the mining industry.
Low readings signal:
- Miner capitulation: Revenue is insufficient to cover operational costs for many miners, forcing them to sell treasury reserves or shut down operations
- Hash rate potential decline: Unprofitable miners going offline reduces network hash rate
- Maximum pessimism: The market is pricing bitcoin low enough that even the most essential participant class (miners) is under financial stress
- Historically strong buying opportunity: These conditions have aligned with the best long-term entry points
Neutral Zone (0.5 to 4)
Most of Bitcoin's price action occurs within this range. A Puell Multiple between 1 and 2 generally indicates a healthy, sustainable mining environment where revenues are in line with or modestly above the yearly average.
The Mining Economics Behind the Metric
Understanding why the Puell Multiple works requires appreciating the economics of Bitcoin mining.
Miners as Forced Sellers
Unlike investors who can choose when to sell, miners have ongoing operational costs -- electricity, hardware depreciation, facility maintenance, and staff. These costs must be paid regardless of market conditions, making miners structural sellers of bitcoin.
When the Puell Multiple is high, miners can comfortably meet expenses and still retain bitcoin. When it is low, miners may need to sell more of their reserves or even previously accumulated bitcoin to stay afloat.
The Halving Effect
Every approximately four years, Bitcoin's block subsidy is cut in half. This event, known as the halving, has a dramatic impact on the Puell Multiple:
- Immediately after a halving: The daily issuance value drops sharply (assuming constant price), causing the Puell Multiple to decline
- In the months following: If price appreciates (as it has historically), the Puell Multiple gradually recovers
- During the subsequent bull run: The Puell Multiple can overshoot significantly as price rises while the 365-day MA still reflects the lower post-halving issuance value
This halving dynamic creates a natural cycle in the Puell Multiple that aligns with Bitcoin's broader market cycles.
Miner Inventory Cycles
Miners operate on an inventory cycle. During periods of high profitability (high Puell Multiple), well-capitalized miners accumulate bitcoin reserves. During periods of low profitability (low Puell Multiple), they are forced to draw down these reserves. This cycle of accumulation and distribution creates selling pressure dynamics that influence market structure.
Historical Signal Performance
Buy Signals (Puell Multiple < 0.5)
- January 2015: Puell Multiple dropped below 0.5 as bitcoin traded near $200. The subsequent bull market carried the price to $20,000
- November 2018: Reached approximately 0.3 during the capitulation to $3,200. Bitcoin eventually rose to $69,000
- June 2022: Dropped below 0.5 during the post-Luna/3AC collapse. Marked a near-term bottom before the eventual recovery
Sell Signals (Puell Multiple > 4)
- December 2013: Exceeded 6 before the crash from $1,100 to $200
- December 2017: Surpassed 4 before the decline from $20,000 to $3,200
- Early 2021: Reached elevated levels before the May 2021 correction
Using the Puell Multiple on Alphractal
Alphractal's dashboard provides the Puell Multiple with several analytical enhancements:
- Historical overlay: Compare current readings with previous cycle equivalents
- Halving markers: Visualize how each halving event affected the Puell Multiple trajectory
- Complementary metrics: View alongside hash rate, mining difficulty, and miner balance data
- Screener alerts: Set notifications when the Puell Multiple enters buy or sell zones
- Alpha AI integration: Receive analysis of current readings in the context of the post-halving timeline and historical patterns
Combining with Other Metrics
The Puell Multiple is most effective when used as part of a multi-metric framework:
- Hash Ribbons: Confirm miner capitulation when both the Puell Multiple is low and hash rate is declining
- MVRV Z-Score: Cross-reference macro overvaluation/undervaluation signals
- Difficulty Ribbon: Understand whether mining difficulty adjustments are compressing or expanding miner margins
- Exchange reserves: Monitor whether miners are sending coins to exchanges (selling) or to cold storage (accumulating)
Limitations
- Transaction fees are excluded: The standard Puell Multiple only considers block subsidy revenue, not transaction fees. As fees become a larger portion of miner revenue (especially post-halving), this omission becomes more significant
- Halving distortions: The sudden halving of issuance creates temporary distortions in the 365-day MA that take a year to fully normalize
- Mining industrialization: As mining becomes more institutional with access to capital markets, the relationship between revenue stress and forced selling may weaken
- Energy cost variation: The metric does not account for regional differences in electricity costs that affect actual miner profitability
