SOPR Explained: How the Spent Output Profit Ratio Reveals Market Sentiment
Alphractal Research · May 7, 2025 · 6 min read
The Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) is an elegant on-chain metric that answers a simple but powerful question: are the people spending bitcoin right now selling at a profit or at a loss? By tracking this ratio over time, analysts can gauge market sentiment, identify trend reversals, and understand the behavioral patterns of different holder cohorts.
What Is SOPR?
SOPR was introduced by Renato Shirakashi in 2019. It is calculated by dividing the realized value (price at the time of spending) of all spent outputs by the created value (price at the time of creation) of those same outputs over a given period.
SOPR = Realized Value of Spent Outputs / Created Value of Spent Outputs
In simpler terms, for every bitcoin that moves on-chain during a period:
- If SOPR > 1: On average, coins are being spent at a profit
- If SOPR = 1: On average, coins are being spent at breakeven
- If SOPR < 1: On average, coins are being spent at a loss
How SOPR Reflects Market Psychology
The beauty of SOPR is that it captures real economic decisions. Every on-chain transaction represents someone choosing to move their coins, and the price at which they acquired those coins versus the current price reveals whether they are locking in gains or crystallizing losses.
SOPR > 1 (Profit-Taking Environment)
When SOPR is consistently above 1, the market is in a regime where holders are realizing profits. This is typical of bull markets, where rising prices encourage participants to sell portions of their holdings at a gain.
However, sustained SOPR readings significantly above 1 can signal increasing distribution and potential exhaustion of buying pressure.
SOPR < 1 (Capitulation Environment)
When SOPR drops below 1, holders are on average selling at a loss. This is a hallmark of bear markets and capitulation events, where fear overrides the rational desire to wait for breakeven.
Extended periods of SOPR below 1 indicate persistent pain in the market, but they also set the stage for recovery. Eventually, those willing to sell at a loss have done so, and the remaining holders have stronger conviction.
SOPR = 1 (The Breakeven Battleground)
The SOPR value of 1 acts as a critical psychological level. During bull markets, pullbacks that bring SOPR to 1 often represent moments where holders are unwilling to sell at a loss, creating support. During bear markets, rallies that push SOPR to 1 often meet resistance as holders rush to exit at breakeven.
SOPR Variants
Adjusted SOPR (aSOPR)
The standard SOPR includes all transactions, which can be noisy. Many on-chain transactions are not economically meaningful -- wallet reorganizations, exchange internal transfers, and change outputs can dilute the signal.
Adjusted SOPR filters out outputs with a lifespan of less than one hour, removing much of this noise and producing a cleaner signal that better reflects genuine economic activity.
Short-Term Holder SOPR (STH-SOPR)
This variant calculates SOPR only for coins held less than 155 days. Short-term holders are more reactive to price changes, so their spending behavior provides a sensitive read on immediate market sentiment.
Key STH-SOPR signals:
- STH-SOPR dropping below 1 in a bull market: Short-term holders are in pain; potential local bottom if buying support holds
- STH-SOPR rising above 1 in a bear market: Short-term holders are briefly in profit; potential local top as they rush to sell
Long-Term Holder SOPR (LTH-SOPR)
This focuses on coins held for more than 155 days. Long-term holders tend to sell only during significant price moves, so LTH-SOPR readings above 1 typically coincide with major trend changes or euphoric tops where even patient holders begin distributing.
SOPR Trading Signals
Bull Market Resets
During confirmed bull markets, watch for SOPR to dip toward 1.0 and then bounce. This pattern indicates that holders refuse to sell at a loss, confirming strong demand and conviction. Each successful retest of SOPR = 1 as support tends to precede the next leg higher.
Bear Market Exhaustion
In bear markets, look for SOPR to spend extended time below 1, then gradually stabilize and begin climbing back toward 1. This transition indicates that selling pressure is exhausting and that a trend reversal may be forming.
Divergences
Some of the most powerful signals come from divergences between SOPR and price:
- Price making new highs while SOPR is declining: Fewer coins are being spent at a profit at each successive high, suggesting weakening momentum
- Price making new lows while SOPR is rising: Even as price drops, the severity of loss-taking is diminishing, suggesting capitulation is fading
Practical Application on Alphractal
On the Alphractal platform, you can analyze SOPR and its variants across multiple timeframes. The dashboard allows you to:
- Overlay SOPR with price to visually identify support and resistance patterns at the SOPR = 1 level
- Compare STH-SOPR and LTH-SOPR side by side to understand which cohort is driving current spending behavior
- Set screener alerts for SOPR crossing above or below the critical 1.0 threshold
- Use Alpha AI to receive contextual analysis of current SOPR readings and how they compare to similar historical conditions
Combining SOPR with Volume
SOPR readings are most significant when accompanied by high on-chain transaction volume. A SOPR below 1 on light volume may just reflect routine transactions, but a SOPR below 1 on heavy volume signals genuine capitulation.
Combining SOPR with Supply in Profit/Loss
While Supply in Profit/Loss tells you the current state of holders, SOPR tells you what holders are actually doing about that state. Both metrics in extreme territory at the same time significantly increases signal conviction.
Limitations
- Not all on-chain movement is selling: Transactions include wallet migrations, cold storage movements, and CoinJoin activity that are not profit-taking or capitulation
- Layer 2 and off-chain activity: Transactions on the Lightning Network and centralized exchanges are not captured by SOPR
- Noise in raw data: Without adjustments (aSOPR), short-lived UTXOs can dominate the signal
